There is no place like home.

The last three days of this adventure have been really hard. Goodbyes were never something I was good at. The word “last” was reoccurring with “final” tailing along. Last dinner, last drink, final goodbye, last walk, etc. The people I met on this trip are one in a million, and not being able to see them all of the time is going to be really hard. The teachers, the students, the Italian friends we met, the kids in the other study abroad program, and of course the friendly shop keepers and bartenders have been nothing but kind and welcoming, and leaving them is definitely going to be difficult. I am so lucky to have gotten to know these people and will never forget any of them.

            The 24+ hours of traveling:
Macerata to Ancona
Ancona to Rome
Rome to Toronto
Missing our flight
Flight delayed
Toronto to Chicago
Chicago to Valparaiso

When I got to the airport in Chicago,  my family was waiting for me and it was so nice to give them a BIG hug!

When I got home, it felt like I had never left, yet still different in a way. I can’t believe my abroad experience is already over. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime, and one that has changed my outlook on life in many ways. I am REALLY going to miss everything about the little city of Macerata, and even Italy in general. However, just like Dorothy said, there is no place like home.

Thank you to everyone who followed my journey abroad and this blog. It meant a lot to me!

Goodnight and Goodbye Macerata.

Basilica's unique architecture

The Holy House of Loreto

According to the New Testament, Jesus was raised by Mary and Joseph in a small town called Nazareth, near Jerusalem. Joseph was a carpenter, and their house was humble. Three centuries after the life of Jesus, the newly-converted Emperor Constantine built a basilica over the humble brick house believed to have sheltered the Holy Family.
According to Catholic tradition, the Holy House came under threat during the turmoil of the Crusades, so in 1291, angels miraculously translated the house from its original location to a site in modern-day Croatia. An empty space was left in Nazareth and a small house suddenly appeared in a field in Croatia. The bewildered parish priest, brought to the scene by shepherds who discovered it, had a vision in which the Virgin Mary revealed it was her former house.
On December 10, 1294, the house was again moved by angels because of the Muslim invasion of Albania. It landed first in Recanti, Italy, but was shortly thereafter moved for a third time to its present location in Loreto.
The Holy House of Loreto, or Santa Casa di Loreto in Italian, has been venerated by pilgrims great and small, including many popes and saints, and numerous miracles and healings have been reported. Scientists are said to have confirmed the materials to be the same as those found in Nazareth and the house lacks normal foundations.

I was not able to take pictures inside of the marble shrine of the actual Holy House, but if  you are interested in seeing what it looked like, I'm sure if you google it, you will find it :)
